Minister of Environment and Urbanization, Murat Kurum, announced that 139 facilities were inspected, 29 businesses were closed and 32 businesses were fined 7.9 million TL for causing unwanted images of garbage in Adana.
Minister Kurum announced on his social media account that Turkey has never imported garbage and that the import of mixed plastic waste was completely banned at the beginning of 2021.
The Minister stated that the recovery rate in waste management has been increased to 19 percent and will be increased to 35 percent in 2023.

“With our efforts in recent years, we have implemented regulations that are important in waste management for clean cities and sustainable environment. Our recovery rate, which we increased to 19% by keeping environmental sensitivity at the highest level, will reach 35% in 2023 and 60% in 2035. We provide waste services to 87% of our population with the support we provide to our municipalities. We have reduced the waste import quota to 50% to support waste collection activities. With our waste mobilization, we aim to reduce the amount of waste and include qualified waste as a valuable resource in the production process.With our Zero Waste Movement, we increase the amount of domestic raw materials even more. With the regulations we made, we have made it obligatory to issue identity documents for imported recyclable raw materials. quality and clean raw We do not introduce any recyclable waste that does not have an identity document for the substance.
Turkey has never imported garbage. As a matter of fact, we banned mixed plastic waste import completely at the beginning of 2021. While implementing the regulations that are important in waste management, we also continue our audits to ensure that our recycling / recovery facilities operate in a healthier way. We conducted audits at 139 facilities with our teams when the images we did not want in Adana appeared. We stopped operating 29 businesses; We imposed 7.9 million TL fine on 32 businesses. We also filed a criminal complaint to the prosecutor’s office about those who cause environmental pollution. We bring new criteria to our recycling / recovery facilities in order not to encounter similar situations again and to protect the health of our environment and our citizens. We are implementing a system where we can track imported wastes online, from customs to recycling facility. We will continue our projects with determination to ensure that our country always has a green and healthy environment.
